What’s the difference between breast augmentation and implants?

What’s the difference between breast augmentation and implants?Women seeking to change the size and shape of their breasts may consider breast augmentation cosmetic surgery, which involves inserting breast implants.

Breast implants are prosthetics, or artificially manufactured products, which are inserted into the breast area to change the appearance of the breasts.

It is typically performed for women who have had one or both breasts removed due to cancer or those with congenitally malformed breasts.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides breast augmentation to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

What are Breast Implants?

Many women seek to enhance the shape and/or size of their breasts without the presence of any underlying condition.

Breasts implants are available in three types, namely silicone implants containing silicon solution, silicone implants comprising saline solution and other implants with miscellaneous fillers.

Breast Implant Types

In general, there are two main types of breast implants, i.e., saline implants and silicone gel implants. Either of these implant types consists of an outer shell made with robust silicone material. However, the inner core differs in both implant types.

Saline Breast Implants

The FDA has approved the use of saline implants for women above the age of 18years. These implants have been popular in the past and were the only type of implants to be approved by the FDA initially.

Saline implants consist of an inner core filled with a sterile saline solution. These implants are meant to provide better shape and tautness to the breasts.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants offer a natural touch and feel in addition to a superior aesthetic appeal due to the presence of a soft gel core. For this reason, these implants are a popular choice for breast augmentation. Women over the age of 21 years can receive this implant type.

Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are form stable and ultra cohesive silicone gel implants. This implant type is the most recent to receive approval from the FDA. In these implants, the silicone gel core is very viscous, enabling them to retain their shape and form even under pressure.

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that aims to insert implants in women who have undergone complete mastectomy (breast removal) due to breast cancer. Silicone implants are the most ideal type of implants used currently as they are resistant to heat and trauma.

These implants offer a very smooth shape to the breast due to their extreme flexibility.

Silicone breast implants also maintain tensile strength and are mostly placed in women who choose the procedure for cosmetic purposes as well as seek a minimal incision placed in the breast area. Breast enhancement involves covering a flap of skin over the implants to create the appearance of a natural breast.

Summarily, the distinction between breast augmentation and breast implants is clear. Breast implants refer to the synthetic parts that are inserted to enhance the breast shape while breast augmentation is the surgical procedure used to place breast implants.

Breast augmentation surgery is undertaken for women with congenitally deformed breasts, those who have had breast(s) removed due to breast cancer, or for those who seek only aesthetic enhancement.
