At the outset, eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty may appear to be a rather simple cosmetic surgery procedure, but it involves several nuances that can have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the face. The steps in eyelid surgery procedure can differ depending on the degree of correction required in the upper, lower or both eyelids.
Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon providing eyelid surgery and various other procedures. Dr. Kaufman will explain all about the procedure during the initial consultation to educate the patient and relieve them of any pre-surgery anxiety. He provides blepharoplasty to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding communities.
Anesthesia
Eyelid lift cosmetic surgery procedure may be performed using only local anesthesia. Mild sedation may be additionally involved in some cases to keep the patient completely comfortable during the surgery. In exceptional situations, an anesthesiologist may be involved to administer light general anesthesia.
Light or local anesthesia will ensure that the patient goes through minimal post-surgical anesthesia effects, and can return home the same day accompanied by a responsible person to drive them back from the surgery venue.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
To perform lower eyelid surgery, the incisions will be discreetly placed in the natural skin creases below the lower eyelashes. This will keep the subsequent scarring minimally exposed. Excess fat tissue and loose skin will be removed through the incision, and the underlying muscles may be repositioned if necessary.
To make the procedure less invasive, the surgeon may use fat transfer injections or dermal fillers to fill the hollows below the lower eyelids. Incisions will be carefully closed with fine sutures after the surgery is completed.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Incisions in case of upper blepharoplasty will be placed in the natural creases of the upper lids. Loose skin will be excised through the incisions to eliminate the droopy look of the upper lids. If the vision is partially obstructed due to saggy upper lids, it will be correct at this stage. Loose underlying muscles may also be tightened in some cases.
Following the removal of excess skin, the plastic surgeon will lift the remaining skin and reattach to create a younger looking appearance of the upper lids. The incisions will be closed with fine sutures after the surgery. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for eyelid surgery.
Transconjunctival Eyelid Surgery
In some cases, the eyelid skin may be reasonably smooth and elastic, but the presence of excessive fat tissue around the eyelids may be causing cosmetic concerns. In such cases, a less invasive transconjunctival eyelid surgery may be performed, particularly if the appearance of under eye bags is less conspicuous.
In this case, multiple tiny incisions will be placed inside the lower eyelid. The excess fat tissue will be removed through the incisions, but muscle tightening and skin removal will not be involved in this surgery. No external scars will show with this minimally invasive technique because the incisions are placed inside the eyelid.
