Male to Female Breast Surgery

Male to Female Breast SurgeryMale to Female (MTF) breast augmentation is a gender affirming surgery to help enhance the breasts through the use of breast implants or fat transfer to create a more feminine appearance. Dr. Bram Kaufman understands that gender affirming surgery is more than just a physical change, and we’re honored by every patient that entrusts us with this surgery. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides gender affirming surgeries to patients in Cleveland, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Lyndhurst, OH, and surrounding locations.

Breast Implants vs Fat Transfer

Male to Female breast augmentation can be performed with either saline or silicone implants or via fat transfer from the patient’s own excess fat. Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can help increase the breast size substantially, while fat transfer is ideal for those who only wish to increase size by up to half a cup. During your initial consultation, your surgeon will help you determine which procedure is right for you and your aesthetic goals.

Procedure

Male to female breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Your exact procedure will depend on your personalized surgical plan as determined with your surgeon. With breast implants, your surgeon will make incisions in concealed areas, such as the crease beneath the chest, along the areola, or under the armpit. The breast implant is then placed into the chest, either under or over the muscle. During fat transfer breast augmentation, excess fat is harvested from another area of the body, such as the abdomen or hips, and transferred into the breasts.

Recovery

Following surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment if you receive breast implants. The garment will help reduce bruising and swelling and improve your comfort for the first week of recovery. Patients should expect swelling and bruising for several weeks following surgery, and may need to take prescribed pain medications for the first 1-2 weeks. You should be able to return to work within 2-3 weeks, or 4-6 weeks for more laborious duties. During your post-op appointment, your surgeon will discuss wound care and steps to help ensure a smooth recovery.

Choosing Your Surgeon

MTF patients often have broader chests with thicker muscles, and implant and nipple positioning must be carefully considered to help create a feminine appearance. To achieve best results, it is important to choose a plastic surgeon that specializes in breast surgery and has experience with gender affirming surgeries.
