What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery typically performed to help those unsatisfied with the look of their nose. This procedure can also be performed to aid with functional issues, such as breathing difficulties, that may occur from a deviated septum, birth defect, or injury. Rhinoplasty can make the nose smaller or larger, smooth bumps and divots, and correct issues with shape and proportion.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty usually takes under 3 hours to complete in an outpatient setting using general anesthesia. During surgery, the incisions are either made inside or between the nostrils. Bone and cartilage are either added or removed, depending on the goals of the surgery. If the patient has a deviated septum, it is straightened during surgery. The procedure is completed after the incisions are sutured closed.

Recovery

Swelling, bruising, minor bleeding, and pain should be expected during the beginning of recovery. You will have the feeling of a stuffy nose for several weeks following surgery and will need to breathe through your mouth. Most discomfort following rhinoplasty can be minimized with a prescription or over-the-counter pain medication, and most patients report that it is a fairly bearable recovery.Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides rhinoplasty to patients in Cleveland, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Lyndhurst, OH, and surrounding locations.
