Liposuction Surgery Procedure Steps

Liposuction Surgery Procedure Steps | Cleveland Plastic SurgeryLiposuction currently ranks as the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US, in part because the surgery is highly customizable. It can be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with other surgeries. However, the procedure steps will mostly remain same under various liposuction surgery options.

Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon providing liposuction and other surgical and non-surgical procedures. During the pre-op consultation, Dr. Kaufman will discuss various steps involved in the liposuction procedure. He provides this surgery to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

Anesthesia

While liposuction cosmetic surgery may be performed using either general or local anesthesia, most surgeons prefer to use latest liposuction techniques that may avoid the need for general anesthesia. Mild sedation along with local anesthesia may be applied in many cases of liposuction today.

A common liposuction surgery technique nowadays is tumescent liposuction. This involves a less invasive approach with smaller incisions, and can be performed only using local anesthesia. However, each case is different and the surgeon will determine the appropriate anesthesia according to the amount of fat to be removed and other issues.

Placing the Incisions

After anesthesia, the surgeon will place small incisions in pre-determined locations where the excess fat tissue needs to be removed. The incision size can usually vary from a quarter to a third of an inch. Incisions should be placed in inconspicuous locations to minimize scarring visibility and produce optimal results in a less invasive way.

Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for liposuction and other surgical and non-surgical procedures related to the body, breast, and face.

Removing Stubborn Fats

Through the incisions, the surgeon will insert a slender vacuum tube called a cannula to remove stubborn, unwanted fat tissue. Once the cannula goes into the deeper fat layers, the surgeon will gently move it back and forth to manually dislodge the fat cells. Once the fats are displaced, the surgeon will use a syringe or pump attached to the other end of the cannula to suction out the fat.

In some cases, the surgeon may combine laser, ultrasound or radio frequency techniques to generate controlled heat and liquefy the stubborn fat. This will make it easier to suction out the fat and make the procedure less aggressive. The patient will receive replacement fluids during this process because some degree of blood and fluid loss will occur as the fat is removed.

Closing the Incisions

The surgeon will close the incisions carefully with sutures once the liposuction is completed. To prevent infection, the surgeon may place drain tubes below the skin to collect excess fluid. Drains and sutures may be removed in about 10 days after the surgery. If absorbable sutures have been used, they will dissolve on their own in a few days.

Sometimes liposuction surgery may be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as body lift, tummy tuck, or mommy makeover. Additional steps may be involved if a combined surgery is planned with liposuction.

Liposuction Surgery Recovery Time | Cleveland Plastic SugeryLiposuction cosmetic surgery will involve a considerable time for recovery, which should be taken into account while planning for this procedure. The time involved can range from just a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size and number of treated areas, the type of liposuction technique, and how diligently the patient follows the surgeon’s recovery instructions.

The plastic surgeon will discuss all aspects of liposuction, including the estimated recovery period during the initial consultation process. The first goal of the surgeon will be to help the patient make a well-considered choice. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides liposuction to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

First Few Weeks

The patient will be required to wear a compression garment in the treated area for the first several days following liposuction cosmetic surgery. This will support healing and expedite recovery. Most patients will feel comfortable enough to remove the compression garment in a few weeks.

Mild pain and soreness in the incision areas is expected after liposuction. The surgeon may prescribe pain meds for a few days to keep the patient comfortable. Moderate walking is encouraged after the first two days. In about one week, most patients will be able to walk and move normally, and even go back to work with minimal discomfort.

Showers instead of baths should be taken in the first week. By the second week, bruising, swelling and numbness will begin to subside considerably. Drain tubes and sutures will be removed in about a week to 10 days after the surgery. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for liposuction.

Swelling Elimination over a Few Months

Complete swelling will be eliminated over a few months after liposuction. Final results of liposuction will be fully visible once it the swelling is completely gone. This period can be longer if the treatment area is larger than usual. The skin around the treated area may appear loose for some time, but it will regain natural elasticity with time.

The patient should continue to monitor the incision area for any signs of infection, and should visit the surgeon as per schedule for post-operative appointments. If the swelling appears excessive at some point, the patient should get in touch with the surgeon promptly.

Exercising to Reduce Recovery Time

The patient should follow the surgeon’s guidelines with regard to exercising to promote recovery after liposuction. Most surgeons usually encourage patients to perform mild exercises after a week or two to protect against blood clot formation and other post-op complications.

The level of activity and exercise can be progressively increased in about two weeks after liposuction. However, strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least one month after the surgery. It may take several months before full results of liposuction surgery are established. The procedure is designed to enhance the shape and contours of specific areas of the body, but it is not a weight loss surgery.

Your Eyelid Surgery Consultation | Cleveland | Cosmetic SurgeryWhen an individual is considering undergoing eyelid lift cosmetic surgery, their first step should be to schedule a consultation with the surgeon of their choice. This will be a detailed consultation, which will form the basis for surgical planning for the eyelid lift procedure.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides eyelid lift and various other procedures to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations. Dr. Kaufman will engage closely with the patient during the initial consultation to help them make the right decisions.

Establishing Goals of Surgery

During the initial consultation process for eyelid lift cosmetic surgery, the surgeon will explain various treatment approaches, surgical techniques and their pros and cons. The estimated costs of each treatment option will also be discussed. The surgical procedure will be explained in detail in order to address the questions and concerns of the patient adequately.

The surgeon will try to understand the innate aesthetic needs, goals and aspirations of the patient and make appropriate recommendations for surgery. The surgeon will also work with the patient to establish reasonable expectations about the results of eyelid surgery. Depending on the patient’s unique needs and surgeon’s evaluation, additional procedures such as facelift, brow lift or cheek lift may be recommended.

Health Evaluation

The plastic surgeon will review the comprehensive medical history of the patient in order to determine if they are in a fit condition for eyelid lift procedure. If the patient is taking any medications or herbal supplements currently, the surgeon must be informed about it. Information about smoking, alcohol, previous surgeries, or refractive procedures such as LASIK should also be informed to the surgeon.

The surgeon may require a few medical tests or ask for medical clearance from the patient’s general physician, depending on the health assessment. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for eyelid lift surgery and other procedures.

Guidance and Precautions

The surgeon will advise the patient to observe certain precautions in the days preceding the surgery. If the patient is a smoker, they will have to completely stop smoking for at least two to four weeks prior to the surgery. Blood thinners such as aspirin, vitamin E, and herbal supplements will have to be stopped two weeks before the surgery.

If the patient is taking any prescription drugs, their schedule may have to be altered in consultation with the physician. All such tasks may be performed as part of the initial consultation. The surgeon will advise the patient about estimated post-operated downtime so that additional help at home and leave from work can be arranged in advance, as required.

Photographs

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon may present blepharoplasty before and after photos of previous patients. This will enable the patient to develop realistic expectations and feel assured about the surgeon’s past outcomes. The surgeon may also take a few photographs of the patient’s pre-surgical eye appearance in order to make comparisons after the surgery. Testimonials of previous patients may also be provided on request.

Eyelid Surgery Risks and Safety Information | Cosmetic Surgery | OhioRisk of complications in eyelid lift cosmetic surgery is minimal, but like any other surgery, the risk does exist. The chances of complications will be influenced by the surgeon’s expertise as well as the individual response of the patient to the eyelid surgery. If the patient cooperates completely with the surgeon’s instructions, severe complications can almost always be avoided.

Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive training in delicate surgical procedures such as eyelid lift. Dr. Kaufman enjoys an impeccable track record of success with such procedures. Patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive cutting edge procedures from him.

Major Complications

Ectropian, hematoma and retinal detachment are three of the major complications that may occur as a result of eyelid lift cosmetic surgery in rare circumstances. Ectropian is a drooping effect that will cause an inverted lower eyelid. This condition can be corrected by performing a revision surgery.

Hematoma is another severe complication which involves collection of fluid beneath the skin. The risk of hematoma increases when eyelid surgery is performed in combination with facelift, brow lift or another facial cosmetic procedure. The surgeon can mitigate this risk by placing drainage tubes below the skin in incision areas, particularly when additional procedures are performed.

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina gets separated from the outer layers of the eye. This condition can be caused by tears or holes in the retina. A skillful surgeon will be able to correct this condition with additional surgery.

Additional Complications

The following complications may occur in a few cases following eyelid lift:

  • Infection
  • Excessive tearing
  • Poor reaction to anesthesia
  • Dry eyes
  • Burning of the eyes
  • Visible scarring
  • Formation of whiteheads after suture removal
  • Difficulty in keeping the eyes closed while sleeping
  • Blurred or double vision

All of these complications are treatable, and in most cases, will subside on their own in a few days. Only in rare circumstances a complication may become permanent. Leading plastic surgeon Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for eyelid lift surgery.

Common Side Effects

Pain and Discomfort

While eyelid surgery is a less invasive procedure, some post-operative pain and discomfort is expected. Following the surgery, the eyelids will typically feel tight and sore while the effect of anesthesia wears off. The surgeon may prescribe pain meds to alleviate the pain.

Mild Swelling

Mild swelling may occur around the incision areas after eyelid lift surgery. Ice packs or cold compresses may be used to reduce swelling. The patient should keep the head in an elevated position as much as possible. Blurry vision may occur while the swelling persists.

Scarring

A skilled surgeon will be able to keep the visible scarring to the minimum. However, some degree of scarring is unavoidable in case of eyelid surgery. When the procedure is performed by an expert, the scars will be discreet and will fade over time. Within a year, the scars would mostly become inconspicuous to the casual observer.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps | Cosmetic Surgery | Pepper Pike | OhioBlepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to rejuvenate the eye appearance and restore youthfulness of the upper face. The procedure involves a number of steps, which can vary depending on whether upper, lower, or both eyelids require correction.

Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon providing eyelid surgery and various other procedures of the breast, body, and face. Patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive state of the art procedures from Dr. Kaufman.

Anesthesia

Eyelid lift cosmetic surgery procedure will usually be performed using local anesthesia. This may be combined with mild sedation so that the patient remains comfortably asleep during the surgery. In a few cases, general anesthesia may have to be used, depending on the extent of procedure, patient’s anxiety levels and the surgeon’s personal assessment.

Anesthesia will be administered by a qualified anesthesiologist or a certified anesthetist nurse. An expert in this field will be able to minimize the risk of complications or poor reactions to anesthesia. Patient’s medical history will be evaluated carefully before administering anesthesia.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Following anesthesia, the next step in lower eyelid surgery will be the placement of incisions in discreet locations to hide the scars. The incision will be placed below the lower eyelashes in the natural skin creases to keep it less noticeable. In the next step, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat tissue through the incisions. If required, the underlying muscles will be tightened through the incisions.

Unwanted fat tissue is usually found under the eye, which can be removed along with sagging skin to create smooth, firm, youthful looking surface above the cheek. If the area below the eyes has hollows, fat transfer technique or dermal filler injections may have to be applied. After the procedure is completed, as a last step, the surgeon will close the incisions carefully with fine sutures.

Upper Blepharoplasty

The first step after anesthesia will be to place incision lines in discreet natural creases of the upper lids. The second step will be to trim away loose skin that may be causing vision obstruction or giving a droopy, tired appearance. If the underlying muscles are weak, those will be tightened through the incision.

Thereafter, the remaining upper lid skin will be lifted and reattached for a younger looking appearance. Once the procedure is completed, the incisions will be closed carefully with sutures. Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

This is a relatively less invasive eyelid surgery that may be performed if the under eye bags are less pronounced. Following anesthesia, the surgeon will place several tiny incisions inside the lower eyelid. No external scarring will occur because the incisions are inside the eyelid.

Through the incisions, the surgeon will remove unwanted pockets of fat. Skin removal and muscle tightening are typically not involved in this procedure. After the procedure is completed, the surgeon will close the incisions with tiny sutures.

Liposuction Plastic Surgery | Cleveland | Pepper Pike|Cosmetic SurgeryLiposuction ranks as the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure today after breast augmentation. The procedure has been around for more than three decades and has consistently remained popular among both women and men. Advancements in surgical techniques in recent years have made liposuction surgery less invasive and more targeted.

Liposuction offers a key advantage that it can be tailored to suit the specific needs of a patient. It can easily be combined with other procedures or performed individually with effective results. Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon with over 25 years of experience, offering liposuction and other surgeries to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

Surgical Techniques

Various liposuction cosmetic surgery techniques are available today to achieve customizable outcomes according to the patient’s needs.

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction technique will be used when there is a need to remove a significant amount of fat from one or more areas. The surgeon will physically manipulate the unwanted fat tissue using a slim cannula inserted through an incision. Once the fat cells are dislodged, the surgeon will remove them with the help of a suction pump attached to the other end of the cannula.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent technique is quite popular nowadays because it can produce more precise outcomes in a less invasive manner. The surgeon will introduce a liberal amount of anesthetic solution through a small incision to cause swelling of the targeted fat cells. This will make it easier to the remove the isolated cells. The procedure involves less risk, less pain, local anesthesia and reduced downtime.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

In some cases, the plastic surgeon may decide to employ ultrasound energy to make liposuction less invasive. The controlled heat generated through ultrasound energy will liquefy the stubborn fat cells, making it easier to suction out larger and denser fat tissue in a less invasive way. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas for liposuction.

Laser Liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction is commonly used today to make the procedure less invasive and more targeted. The principle involved is similar to that of ultrasonic liposuction, but the heat here is generated through laser energy. The surgeon may use laser liposuction in more sensitive areas such as the chin, neck, cheeks, jowls, and upper arms.

Abdominal Etching

One of the popular procedures today is abdominal etching, which involves a special liposuction technique. The surgeon can use this technique to enhance the appearance of the abdominal muscles, and create a much-desirable ‘six-pack’ look. The technique involves outlining of the muscles and layering them up with a thin film of fat to obscure the muscle.

Recovery

Liposuction will usually involve a downtime of about one week to 10 days. However, in case of a smaller amount of fat removal, the patient may be able to resume their normal activities in about three to five days. Vigorous exercises and heavy lifting of weights should be avoided for about a month until healing is completed.

Rising Demand

In recent years, innovative surgical techniques and technology have been introduced to make cosmetic surgery less invasive, less painful, and involving minimal downtime. Patient satisfaction rates are higher than ever before, particularly when the procedures are performed by highly skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeons.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has released data, which reveals that 15.9 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were carried out in the US in 2015. This roughly translates to one procedure for every 16 adults in the country. Dr. Kaufman is one of the pre-eminent plastic surgeons providing both surgical and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. He receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas.

Important Trends

Some of the latest trends in the area of cosmetic surgery in the US are presented below. All the figures are officially provided by the ASPS:

Growth in Procedures

While a little over 7.4 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the US in 2000, the number has more than doubled to 15.9 million in 2015. This represents an increase of 115 percent in the demand of these procedures.

Top Five Minimally Invasive Procedures

Non-invasive and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures have witnessed a strong growth in recent years. Innovations in this arena have the procedures safer, more effective and more affordable. The five most popular minimally invasive procedures in 2015 were as follows:

  • Botox: 6.7 million
  • Dermal Fillers: 2.4 million
  • Chemical Peels: 1.3 m
  • Laser Hair Removal: 1.1 m
  • Microdermabrasion: 0.8 m

Top Five Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

While liposuction was the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US for the last few years, it was surpassed by breast implant surgery in 2015. The five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in 2015 were ranked as follows:

  • Breast Augmentation: 279,143
  • Liposuction: 222,051
  • Nose Reshaping: 217,919
  • Eyelid Surgery: 203,934
  • Tummy Tuck: 127,967

Highest Year-on-Year Jump in Buttock Implants

The fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedure in 2015 was buttock augmentation. While in 2000, the demand for buttock implants was practically non-existent, 2,540 butt implant surgeries were performed in 2015. In comparison, only 1,863 surgeries were performed in 2014, which reveals a phenomenal year-on-year growth in this procedure.

Wider Range of Procedures

At one time, plastic surgery was synonymous with breast implants, liposuction, and facelift. However, there has been a diversified interest among Americans seeking cosmetic enhancement in 2015. Procedures in 2015 included:

  • Breast Lift: 99,614
  • Buttock Lift: 4,767
  • Lower Body Lift: 8,431
  • Upper Arm Lift: 4,959

Males Seeking Breast Reduction

For the first time in 2015, men accounted for over 40 percent of all breast reduction surgeries. While 40,640 procedures were performed for women, as many as 27,456 were performed for men.

Plastic Surgery and Beauty Trends of 2016 | Cleveland | Pepper PikeAdvancements in cosmetic surgery procedures over the years have led to more people seeking treatments to improve their appearance and gain new confidence. New trends in plastic surgery are now emerging, which are expected to add further to the popularity of these procedures.

Dr. Bram Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon with over 25 years of experience. Dr. Kaufman provides a wide range of procedures for the breast, body and face to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

Oversized Breast Implants Going Out

While breast augmentation continues to dominate the industry as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, the demand for very large sized implants is waning. A growing number of women are seeking smaller sized implants in comparison to the past. The change in an average woman’s breast ideals is probably inspired by the change in celebrity ideals. Patients often quote smaller-chested beauties such as Kate Hudson, Rihanna and Gwen Stefani to explain their desire for implants.

Breast Reduction Becoming Popular

The demand for smaller sized breast implants is accompanied by a notable rise in requests for breast reduction surgery. Younger women, and even teens, are especially showing greater interest in breast reduction surgery. The media attention garnered by the 17-year old Modern Family star, Ariel Winter, who is known to have received breast reduction surgery, could be one reason behind this trend.

Larger Lips are in Vogue

Dermatologists and facial plastic surgeons indicate that they have been witnessing a surge in requests from women seeking augmented lips. Some of the women mention Kylie Jenner’s lip enhancement and also Angelina Jolie’s. Bigger lips have been much sought-after in recent years, but the trend has acquired new steam since the last one year. Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas.

Growth in Sexual Aesthetic Procedures

A growing number of women are now willing to talk about their need to enhance their sexual aesthetics. Over the last one year, the growth in vaginal rejuvenation procedures has very noticeable. Many mothers want to regain a tighter and more youthful looking vagina. Media coverage has contributed to this trend, particularly with the introduction of innovative surgical as well as non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments.

Neck and Chin Enhancement

Aesthetic experts suggest that the year 2016 and beyond will experience a phenomenal rise in neck and chin sculpting procedures. While chin lift, neck lift and liposuction continue to become popular, the field has expanded further with the recent FDA clearances for non-surgical double chin reduction techniques such as Kybella injections and CoolMini from the makers of CoolSculpting.

Male Procedures on the Rise

Minimally invasive and non-invasive double chin reduction procedures have encouraged more men to seek these procedures. At the same time, the field of cosmetic enhancement on the whole is becoming more acceptable to men. For instance, analysts say that a lot of men want to achieve a strong jawline, keeping in the mind the sterling jawline of Mel Gibson or Kurt Russell.

Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery Time | Pepper Pike | Cleveland OHWhile breast reduction is a safe and common cosmetic surgery procedure, it does involve some recovery time. A woman planning to undergo breast reduction should have a clear idea of what to expect during the recovery phase and prepare appropriately for it. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides breast reduction to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations.

First Two Weeks

Mild bruising and swelling is expected after breast reduction, which will resolve on its own in a few weeks. Initial pain and soreness can be addressed with pain medications. The patient may apply a moisturizer on the breasts to get relief from dryness and itching, but the incision areas should not be directly moisturized.

Immediately after the breast reduction cosmetic surgery, the breasts will be wrapped in gauze and dressings. The patient will have to wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra. Once the dressings are taken out, the surgical bra will still have to be worn for several weeks. Stitches would be removed in about one to two weeks, depending on the healing.

Vigorous activities and heavy lifting must be avoided for about four weeks after breast reduction. Depending on the nature of their work, most women may be able to return to their workplace in 10 to 14 days. In the first week, the plastic surgeon may instruct the patient to refrain from sexual activity as it may lead to inflammation around the incisions. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas.

First Few Months

Following breast reduction, the patient should ensure that any contact with the breasts is gentle for at least one month. Swelling and tenderness in the breasts can occur during the first menstrual period of the recovery process. Changes in the sensation of breast skin and nipples are commonly experienced after the surgery. Numbness may last for up to a year, while a few women may experience hypersensitivity in the breast area.

Patients should be aware that swelling after the breast reduction surgery may take as long as six months to a year to be eliminated completely. This happens because the breast tissue is considerably disrupted during the surgery. Final results of the procedure will become apparent as the swelling disappears entirely.

Healing is usually faster and uncomplicated in cases where the patient follows the surgeon’s instructions diligently during recovery. Maintaining hygiene, doing light exercises to promote blood flow, and following a balanced diet that is rich in lean proteins will help to expedite recovery.

Scarring

Scars in case of breast reduction will be permanent, and may appear red and lumpy for a few months before they fade to slender white lines. An experienced surgeon will place incisions in discreet locations so that the patient can wear swim suits and low-cut tops as desired. The choice of technique and the extent of surgery performed will determine the final appearance of scars.

Smoking should be avoided for several weeks after the surgery. The patient should monitor the incision sites regularly for any signs of infection during the recovery period.
