Silicone Implants vs. Saline Implants

Silicone Implants vs. Saline ImplantsA key choice to be made for your breast augmentation will be whether to have silicone or saline breast implants. During your first consultation, your surgeon will explain the differences between the two implants to help you in making an informed decision. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides silicone and saline breast augmentation to patients in Cleveland, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Lyndhurst, OH, and surrounding locations.

Texture and Feel

Saline and silicone breast implants have distinct textures. Silicone implants are softer and feel more like natural fat. Saline implants feel more solid in comparison, although they still look natural.

Appearance

Silicone implants offer a more natural look, due to the way they hang over the shape of the breast, similar to natural breast tissue. Saline implants have a firmer and fuller, round shape.

Surgical Incisions

During surgery, silicone and saline implants are inserted in different areas of the chest using unique incisions. Silicone implants, which come pre-filled from the manufacturer with silicone gel, require a larger incision to be inserted into the chest. Saline implants come empty and are inserted into the chest before they are filled with saline solution, only requiring a smaller incision.

Difference in Result Longevity

Although implants are made to be durable and long-lasting, they must be exchanged or removed after a number of years. Both silicone and saline implants have a similar life expectancy of 10-20 years.

Rippling and Rupture

Although rare, it is possible for a breast implant to rupture. If this happens, the silicone fluid may disperse throughout the body, resulting in health issues. Saline implants are considered to be safer, as they are composed of a solution that can be absorbed by the body. Implant rippling can happen due to capsular contracture or implants that are not the correct size. This could potentially affect the look of the skin and is an equivalent risk regardless of whether the implant is made of saline or silicone.
