Eyelid Surgery (Eye Lift or Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery, clinically known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reduce excess skin and fat from the eyelids, and in some cases, tighten the weak underlying muscles. Men and women who are bothered by the appearance of bags under the eyes, or wrinkles and lines that make the eyes appear old, tired or angry, may choose this procedure.
Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Bram Kaufman, provides blepharoplasty for both upper and lower eyelids, involving the latest techniques. It is important to choose a qualified and trained surgeon for a delicate procedure such as eyelid surgery. Patients in Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding areas have an opportunity to receive this surgery from Dr. Kaufman.
Need for Blepharoplasty
A cosmetic surgery procedure such as blepharoplasty can serve the following aesthetic and functional purposes:
- Removal of upper eyelid puffiness through excision of excess fat tissue around the eyes.
- Reduction of excess skin, wrinkles, and folds around the lower eyelids to restore a rejuvenated appearance of the eyes.
- Correction of functional issues such as vision obstruction, which may occur due to saggy skin in the upper eyelids.
- Surgical removal of unsightly bags beneath the eyes.
- Restoration of regular eye appearance in case the white below the iris is showing due to droopy lower lids.
Suitable Candidates
Any adult who is bothered by the angry, tired or wrinkled appearance of the eyes may benefit from blepharoplasty. Suitable candidates will ideally have healthy facial muscle and tissue in order to receive more sustainable outcomes. As a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kaufman will evaluate closely whether a patient is a good candidate, and may recommend the most appropriate treatment approach.
A good candidate will be a non-smoker or will have to stop smoking several weeks in advance. Those who have a positive frame of mind, clear aesthetic goals, and realistic expectations will typically make sterling candidates. Patients with major eye disease may not be recommended for this procedure. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby locations for this procedure.
Procedure
The surgeon may perform eyelid surgery under general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. Small incisions will be placed in the natural folds of the skin to keep the visible scarring to the minimum. In case of droopy upper lids, the surgeon may remove or redistribute excess fat, excise loose skin, and tighten underlying muscles as needed.
If the lower eyelids appear wrinkled and tired, the surgeon may place the incision below the lower lash line to correct the condition. If the muscles do not need to be tightened, a transconjunctival procedure may be performed.
Recovery Process
On average, it will take about a week for the patient to recover and return to normal activities or go to work. Results will establish gradually over several weeks as the swelling disappears. In the first week, the patient may use mild pain medication as directed by the surgeon, and apply ice packs over the swollen areas to promote healing and so the patient remains comfortable.
