Breast Enlargement Augmentation Overview

Breast Enlargement Augmentation OverviewBreast enlargement is a cosmetic surgery aimed at enhancing the size and shape of a woman’s breasts through insertion of saline or silicone implants. As per the data provided by ASAPS, nearly 4.5 million breast enlargement surgeries were performed in US between 1997 and 2012. It currently ranks as the second-most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US after liposuction.

Clinically called augmentation mammoplasty, the breast enlargement procedure should ideally be performed by a highly trained and experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Bram Kaufman is a leading plastic surgeon providing breast enlargement and other procedures to patients in Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding communities.

Golden Candidates

Patients who seek breast enlargement cosmetic surgery for one or more of the following reasons may make good candidates:

  • Make the breasts more proportionate with the rest of the body.
  • Make the breasts more symmetrical to each other.
  • Improve personal aesthetic appeal through more voluptuous looking breasts.
  • Restore breast volume following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
  • Correct congenital defects in one or both breasts.
  • Reconstruct the breasts following mastectomy or a breast injury.

Customization

As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Kaufman is able to customize the breast enlargement procedure in accordance with the unique aesthetic needs of his patients in Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas. The final outcome of breast enlargement will be impacted by the choices and decisions that are made at the time of surgical planning.

Choice of Implants

Patients can choose between saline, silicone gel, and highly cohesive or form stable breast implants. The size, shape, profile, and texture of the implants should also be chosen appropriately.

Implant Placement

The implant can be placed in the breast pocket that is created either underneath the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle, just behind the breast tissue.

Incision Location

Incisions can be located just beneath the breast crease, along the circumference of the lower half of the areola, in the armpit, or even around the navel in a few cases.

Procedure

Following anesthesia or IV sedation, the surgeon will begin the procedure by placing an incision in the pre-determined location. The incisions will be kept as discreet as possible to minimize the visibility of scarring. The surgeon will carve a breast pocket according to the position of implant placement as decided during the surgical planning.

Breast implants will be inserted through the incisions, and adjusted into place appropriately. Once the implant placement is completed, the surgeon will close the incisions carefully with traditional or absorbable sutures. The breasts will be wrapped in bandages for the first one or two days. The surgeon will provide a special bra which must be worn for several weeks to support the healing.

Recovery

Most patients will be ready to resume their regular activities or return to work in about 10 to 14 days following breast enlargement surgery. Initial pain and discomfort can be managed with pain medications as prescribed by the surgeon. Strenuous exercises and heavy lifting of weights should be avoided for at least a month.
