A DIEP flap surgery is a surgical method that utilizes a woman’s own tissue to reconstruct the breast after a mastectomy. This procedure harvests tissue from a woman’s abdomen and may be used alone or in addition to a breast implant to reconstruct the breast. Procedure

During surgery, an area of skin, fat, and blood vessels are all surgically removed from the abdomen, reshaped, and attached to the chest to create a new breast. With this procedure, no muscle is cut or removed. The blood vessels from the harvested area are reattached to the vessels in the chest, saving blood supply to the tissue. 

Pros of DIEP Flap

Since the muscles are undisturbed, women experience quicker recovery time with DIEP flap versus other reconstruction procedures. DIEP flap also offers less complications than other methods, and is a permanent solution to reconstruction versus breast implants, which will need to be replaced after so many years.

Cons of DIEP Flap

A disadvantage of this procedure is that two areas of the body undergo surgery, the breast and the abdomen, which increases the recovery length versus simply using breast implants. DIEP flap will also result in a scar along the abdomen where the tissue is harvested from.

Candidacy

Ideal candidates for DIEP flap procedure are women that have enough tissue and fat to harvest from to create a new breast, and women that do not wish to reconstruct using breast implants. DIEP flap is not ideal for women that are very thin and do not have enough tissue to create a new breast.
