Liposuction (lipoplasty) is a sought-after choice for patients seeking body contouring through cosmetic surgery. This procedure suctions out fat from precise areas of the body to develop the desired figure.
Since this is a targeted procedure, patients usually choose liposuction to slim down their body shape.
Liposuction, also known as the “body sculpting” procedure, can effectively eliminate fat in the buttocks, abdomen, neck, thighs, legs and other body areas.
A Common Question by Patients
While liposuction can effectively remove undesirable fat from the body, is it as successful in addressing other body issues such as cellulite? Many patients seek answer to this question during their initial consultation.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides liposuction to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding communities.
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is a frustrating issue with no apparent reason for its development. It also occurs regardless of the patient’s activity level or body type.
This condition mostly affects women and is characterized by unattractive dimples on the buttocks and thighs which can even be visible through certain clothing in severe cases.
Women who are self-conscious about their cellulite appearance usually feel uncomfortable in attire such as swimsuits and short skirts.
Can Liposuction Eliminate Cellulite?
Cellulite is the dimpled effect on the skin that can manifest on the hips and other areas of the body. Many women have cellulite on the skin, particularly in the buttocks and thigh areas.
Cellulite occurs due to fat deposits being pushed up on the skin leading to an undesirable rippling effect.
A skilled surgeon will understand that cellulite can make a patient feel very uncomfortable. But liposuction cosmetic surgery may not be an appropriate procedure for patients seeking only cellulite removal. While liposuction will permanently eliminate fat from the body and sculpt it, it does not eliminate cellulite in a significant way.
It is important to understand the reasons for cellulite development in order to determine its treatment. Cellulite dimples become visible when the vertical bands of connective tissue develop underneath the skin, pulling the skin downwards.
While excess fat can make cellulite look worse, it is not the real reason behind its development. For this reason, liposuction on the buttocks and thighs can only marginally improve the appearance of cellulite. Thin skin on the buttocks and thighs can aggravate the problem causing cellulite to become more visible.
As older women tend to have less elastic skin, this symptom is particularly problematic for them. There is some indication that laser and ultrasound-assisted liposuction can mitigate cellulite as these procedures tighten the skin during fat removal. However, these treatments alone are insufficient for cellulite removal.
How Can I Get Rid of Cellulite?
Liposuction eliminates fat, but it will not help a patient get rid of cellulite entirely. As such, there is no official treatment for cellulite. But some things can help the patient minimize the appearance of dimpled skin. Exercising is one way to reduce the appearance of cellulite on the body. Weight loss will also help minimize the cellulite.
While the appearance of cellulite is certainly undesirable, it is completely natural. In general, cellulite is quite common among women, and almost everyone has it, irrespective of their body size and weight.
