Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Plastic Surgery Overview
Tummy tuck, clinically known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to address the conditions of sagging skin around the midsection and weakened abdominal muscles, and restore a flatter and firmer abdomen. The procedure may involve a multi-pronged surgical approach, including excision of loose skin, tightening of weak muscles, and removal of excess fat deposits.
Tummy tuck surgery should be performed by a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon with a proven track record of successful procedures. Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Bram Kaufman, is a respected name in the area of tummy tuck and other body contouring procedures. Dr. Kaufman receives patients from Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding communities.
Good Candidates
A good candidate for tummy tuck surgery would be in good general health, who is bothered by the presence of excess fats and droopy skin and muscles around the abdomen. The candidate should have realistic expectations and a commitment to maintain the results with a healthy diet and exercise routine.
The ideal candidate will be a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking well in advance. The candidate should not have a near-term plan for pregnancy or a plan to undergo major weight loss following tummy tuck.
Types of Abdominoplasty
Traditional tummy tuck cosmetic surgery is the most common form of abdominoplasty. It involves a hip to hip incision, and may include additional incisions around the navel. The goal is to address the entire abdominal area, and the procedure may be combined with liposuction.
Another type is partial abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck, which requires a single small incision. The surgery is designed to improve the appearance of lower abdomen below the belly button. In some cases, the cosmetic surgeon may perform an endoscopic tummy tuck, which involves the use of tiny camera attached to an endoscope. The camera allows for clear viewing from inside without making a large incision.
Some patients may require a circumferential tummy tuck surgery, which is a kind of body lift procedure. It is typically recommended for patients who have received a gastric bypass surgery resulting in massive weight loss and appearance of a large amount of loose skin in the tummy area. Dr. Kaufman is a board certified plastic surgeon who provides various surgical techniques for tummy tuck to patients in Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby locations.
Procedure
Depending on the technique involved, tummy tuck surgery may be performed under general or local anesthesia. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove excess fat and skin, and tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. In most cases, the position of the navel may be raised to a more youthful level.
When the surgery is complete, the new, tighter skin will be sutured together. A surgical drain will be placed at the incision site to expedite the healing process and minimize the risk of infection by collecting excess fluid.
Recovery
Most patients will be able to return to work or resume their normal daily activities in about 10 to 14 days following tummy tuck surgery. However, lifting of heavy weights and vigorous exercises should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.
