What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to increase the size of breasts in proportion to the rest of the body. The procedure involves surgical insertion of saline or silicone gel based breast implants in the breast tissue in order to enhance the size and volume of breasts. Breast implant procedure is typically performed for cosmetic reasons to address the needs of women who are bothered by relatively smaller size of breasts.
In some cases, however, the surgeon may also recommend breast augmentation procedure to improve breast symmetry, or restore breasts following a mastectomy. Breast implant surgery may be combined with breast lift for some patients to produce more comprehensive results. Types of Breast Implants
The FDA has approved silicone and saline implants for women above the ages of 21 years and 18 years respectively. Both types of implants are widely accepted, but silicone implants have become more popular in recent years. Implants are available in sizes ranging from 120 cc to 960 cc. Choices in shapes, profiles, and textures are also available.
Surgical Procedure
Breast augmentation procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, but IV sedation may also be used in certain cases. The decisions regarding incision location, placement of implants, and the choice of implants are made well in advance. The procedure will start with the surgeon placing a discreet incision beneath the breast curve, in the underarm, around the belly button, or around the areola.
Through the incision, the surgeon will create a breast cavity and place the implant in the desired position below the chest muscle or between the muscle and tissue. The implants will be adjusted into position, and the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures or skin adhesive.
Recovery
Patients will usually experience mild pain and soreness in the breasts for a few days, which can be managed with pain medications. Sutures and drains will be removed after a week. Most patients will be ready to go back to work or resume their regular activities in about 10 to 14 days. Vigorous exercises should be avoided for at least six weeks.
