Gynecomastia (Enlarged Male Breasts) Surgery

Gynecomastia (Enlarged Male Breasts) SurgeryGynecomastia surgery is also known as male breast reduction surgery. This cosmetic surgery procedure is designed to eliminate excess tissue in the breast area in men. The procedure provides definition to the male chest and creates a masculine, handsome appearance.

Judicious board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bram Kaufman provides gynecomastia surgery to patients in Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding locations in The Mother of Presidents.

Consultation

A detailed consultation with the surgeon is the initial step in the male breast reduction procedure. The surgeon will assess the patient as a candidate for gynecomastia during the consultation process. They will also understand the patient’s cosmetic goals and desires as well as answers any questions that he may have on the surgical procedure.

The surgeon may evaluate the patient’s previous health records and conduct a general breast examination. They will use the inputs from the consultation process to develop an individualized breast reduction surgery plan. In addition, the surgeon will offer the patient guidelines for before and after the gynecomastia surgery.

Anesthesia

While male breast reduction cosmetic surgery is commonly performed using general anesthesia, the surgeon may sometimes perform the procedure with the patient under local anesthesia with sedation. This will be the initial step after the patient is brought into the operating room.

An anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will remain in attendance during the surgery to oversee the patient’s reaction to the anesthetic. The patient will be brought out of anesthesia after the surgery is complete.

Incision Placement

The surgeon will place the incisions after the patient is under anesthesia. They will place the incision in inconspicuous, pre-determined areas keeping in mind the patient’s preferences.

The patient may receive only tiny incisions if the gynecomastia surgery only involves the reduction of fatty tissue via liposuction. However, the elimination of glandular tissue will involve a more significant incision along the natural skin crease.

Surgery

The surgeon will cautiously excise the excess fat tissue and skin through these incisions. Many gynecomastia surgeries involve liposuction as well as direct excision techniques.

Using these tiny incisions placed within the areola borders or beneath the breasts, the plastic surgeon will remove excess fat using liposuction. They will remove excess glandular skin and tissue via direct excision technique. The surgeon may also use lipo to sculpt the chest.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually undertaken as an outpatient procedure. The patient may receive this surgery at an accredited surgical center, a hospital, or a private surgical suite. During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will make the decision on the surgical venue in discussion with the patient.

Closing the Incisions

After the procedure is complete, the surgeon will seal the incisions with external and internal sutures. They may place temporary drain pipes in the incision areas to accumulate excess fluid.

Subsequently, the patient will be shifted to an observation area. The incisions will be bandaged, and the patient will need to wear a compression garment to support the new breast shape. The surgeon will remove the sutures and drain tubes in around seven to ten days after the procedure.
