Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion Skin Rejuvenation

Dermabrasion is an effective non-surgical aesthetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the skin. The procedure is most commonly performed on the face, but may also be applied effectively to other sites. Dermabrasion can effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars and fine lines around the mouth. Sometimes the procedure may also be used to treat inflammatory skin conditions caused due to rosacea.

Candidates

Many patients are keen to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, or minimize the impact of acne scars and other skin aberrations. However, not all of them may be ready to undergo a facelift or another facial surgery procedure. In such cases, the surgeon may recommend dermabrasion as an effective non-surgical alternative.

Technique

The dermabrasion technique involves the use of a wire brush or a diamond wheel with coarse edges to gently remove the top layers of the skin. The brush rotates in rapid movements, causing the removal, and leveling of the uppermost skin layers.

As the superficial skin wound heals gradually, new skin will grow to replace the damaged skin. The technique can be customized according to the patient’s aesthetic needs to achieve the desired level of skin resurfacing.

Procedure

Dermabrasion is usually performed using a local anesthetic such as lidocaine. The treatment provider may also use ice packs to numb the skin prior to treatment. IV sedation or general anesthesia may be used in exceptional cases where deeper abrasions or the entire face are involved. The skin care expert will treat one targeted area at a time.

The rotating brush is applied to take off the upper layers of the skin. Gauze will be used to stop any bleeding, and the treated area will be covered with an ointment or clean dressing. Dermabrasion is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
