Breast enlargement is the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US today after liposuction. Constant improvements and innovations in surgical techniques have reduced the downtime involved and made the recovery relatively easier. However, it continues to be critically important that the patient follows the surgeon’s instructions diligently during the recovery period.
Dr. Bram Kaufman is a leading plastic surgeon providing breast enlargement and various other procedures of the breast, body and face. During the initial consultation, Dr. Kaufman will discuss various aspects of the procedure, including the estimated recovery. He receives patients from Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and surrounding communities.

Expected Downtime
Breast enlargement cosmetic surgery typically requires a patient to reduce physical activity substantially for the first three days, and perform very mild activities in the home for the next three to four days. From the second week, the patient can gradually resume more vigorous tasks.
The actual amount of downtime as well as the total time required for a full recovery will vary from one patient to another, depending on the location of incision, placement position of the implants, and the patient’s natural ability to heal.
Most patients can resume their regular activities in about 10 to 14 days or go back to work. However, strenuous exercises and lifting of heavy objects should be avoided for at least one month.

Use of Surgical Bra
An important aspect of the recovery in breast enlargement is the healing garments. The plastic surgeon will recommend the appropriate garments in each case. If the placement of implants is subglandular, the healing will be quicker, and the patient may need only a normal bra without an underwire to support the breasts.
In case of submuscular implant placement, a wrap-style bandage or a special surgical bra may be recommended. This will allow the implant to achieve harmony with the muscle and breast tissue, and provide a natural breast appearance while promoting healing. Dr. Kaufman provides breast enlargement to patients in Pepper Pike, Cleveland, OH, and nearby areas.
Avoid Smoking
Smoking and healing definitely do not go together. Blood vessels can shrink due to nicotine, which will lower the oxygen levels in the blood and negatively impact the function of red blood cells. As a result, the healing process can get delayed significantly and pose risk for the patient.
Pain Management
Mild pain and soreness in the incision areas is expected after breast enlargement procedure for a few days. The surgeon will usually prescribe pain medications to keep the patient comfortable. Driving or other activities that demand high alertness should be avoided while the patient is taking these drugs.
Follow-up Visits
If breast enlargement is performed as an outpatient procedure, the surgeon may require seeing the patient for review just the following day. Alternatively, some surgeons may call the patient around the end of first week, when they will monitor the condition as well as remove sutures and drains. The surgeon may also advise the patient to choose a massage regimen in order to facilitate proper breast positioning.
